OJAVC Launches Decolonial Curatorial Practices Essay Series
Onyx Press announces the launch of the Decolonial Curatorial Practices essay series, a year-long programme of commissioned critical essays published continuously in the Onyx Journal of Arts & Visual Culture. The series is guest-edited by Dr. Aïssata Koné (Université de Bamako) and Dr. Hēmi Whaiapu (University of Auckland), and will publish two long-form essays per month between September 2026 and August 2027.
The series is organised around three thematic clusters: restitution and repatriation logistics; non-Western epistemologies of display; and the politics of digital surrogate collections. Each essay will be paired with a primary-source appendix — typically a previously unpublished curatorial memorandum, a translated oral-history transcript, or a set of archival photographs released under open licence.
The editorial board has confirmed that all essays will be published in English with synchronous translation available in French, Spanish, and te reo Māori where the author requests.
